Five levels, five scopes
Each certification matches a scope of leadership accountability: Influence, Team, Operations, Strategy and Enterprise.

How to choose your level
Choose by the scope you lead now, not your job title or years in work. You do not have to start at CEL or collect earlier certificates first.
What evidence you will need
- Evidence from your real work: plans, decisions, records and outcomes.
- Outcomes that changed because of your leadership.
- Corroboration from people who saw your leadership directly.
You are not expected to create leadership experiences for the certification. You identify and evidence leadership you have actually demonstrated.

Support from your employer
Employers can sponsor candidates for certification. Sponsorship never affects the assessment: LII assesses the individual, not the sponsor.
Why it is credible
- LII does not train, so it has no stake in who passes.
- Qualified, independent assessors make the judgement.
- Every decision has a published route to appeal.
Questions
Do I need direct reports?
No. CEL does not require direct reports or a management title. Each certification is about the scope of leadership you exercise, not the size of the team you manage.
Do I need to start at CEL?
No. You submit at the certification that fits your current scope of leadership accountability and evidence. Certification is based on demonstrated leadership, not on collecting lower-level certificates first.
Is LII a training provider?
No. LII does not deliver training, coaching or programmes. It independently assesses leadership you have already exercised.
What evidence can I use?
Your real work: plans, decisions, meeting records, briefings, stakeholder communication, change activity, people-development records, and accounts from people who saw your leadership.
How am I assessed?
Through a portfolio of evidence, a professional practice review, a strategic project and an assessment panel conversation. Qualified, independent assessors make the judgement, and LII's Standards Committee ratifies each decision.
Leadership recognition for young people.
The Certified Young Leader (CYL) recognises young people aged 15–24 who can demonstrate leadership through real activity and experience. It is a separate foundation certification and is not part of the CEL–CXL professional pathway.

LII Individual Certification is an independent, evidence-based leadership certification awarded by the Leadership Impact Institute. It is not an academic qualification, a regulated or government-accredited qualification, a licence to practise, or a level on any national qualifications framework.
