How LII decisions are made

Every LII decision rests on evidence, independent assessment and a route to appeal.

Standards and policies

At a glance

  1. Governance BoardApproves LII's standards and any change to them.
  2. Standards CommitteeManages the standards and oversees assessment decisions.
  3. Independent assessorsJudge the evidence against the standard.
  4. Quality reviewDecisions are checked before they are confirmed.
  5. AppealsAny applicant can appeal a decision to a panel that took no part in it.

Governance Board

The Governance Board is LII's highest authority. It approves LII's standards and is the only body that can amend them. Final appeals are heard by its Chair.

Standards Committee

The Standards Committee manages LII's standards and their review. It oversees assessment and ratifies certification decisions before they are issued.

Independent assessment

Assessors are appointed against defined criteria and declare any conflict of interest before they see evidence. They have no commercial relationship with the people or organisations they assess.

Assessment is kept separate from LII's commercial activity. The fee never sets the level.

Quality review

Decisions are checked before they are confirmed, so that the same standard is applied consistently across assessors and over time.

Appeals and complaints

Every applicant can appeal a decision on the grounds set out in LII's policy, to a panel that took no part in the original decision. Complaints about any part of LII's service are handled under the same policy.

Leadership and people

The people who lead LII, lead its assessment, and advise it. Commercial and institutional leadership is kept separate from assessment decisions.

Dr James Alexander

He is responsible for confirming eligibility and assessment scope, appointing assessors and quality reviewers, overseeing calibration so that the standard is applied consistently, and making accreditation decisions. The role is deliberately independent: he holds no sales, commercial or partnership role for any applicant, and his appointment does not depend on assessment outcomes or the number of awards made.
